This is a stunning antique Aesthetic movement ebonised mahogany sideboard, made around 1880/1890 when the Aesthetic Movement was flourishing in the UK. The Aesthetic movement was hugely inspired by Japanism with the opening of the Japanese borders in the early 1860's which influenced many of the great artists and designers of the time. E W Godwin was one of its greatest exponents, designing for all the best retailers and manufacturers.
This ebonised sideboard (they are also known as chiffoniers) was intended to hold small quantities of china, cutlery or other items that needed to be stored tidily away, as well as be a decorative item of furniture that makes a statement in a hallway, dining area or living room. This piece is of an exceptionally high quality and it has a lot of ?extras? that you don?t see on lesser made items of furniture. The bevelled glass on the mirrors, the combination of ebonised wood, gilding and mahogany panels, intricate wooden fretwork and carving all point to this being a piece of furniture that was intended to be a family heirloom, and it was most certainly inspired by Edward Godwin/Christopher Dresser.
