Fabulous original elm coffer, with brass escutcheon and original hand forged iron hinges with hand made rose headed nails, still in place and working perfectly. It has a decorative moulding around the top and base. Possibly a marriage chest as there is a date (1857) carved into the front with a heart and the initials 'WB". Elm coffers were used instead of oak because elm trees allowed wider stable boards with beautiful swirling grain. This type of coffer is known as a 6 board coffer, as 6 planks of wood were used to make it.
